My Quintessentially Canadian Playlist

During my presentation, the idea of “phenomenological representativeness” was discussed concerning the Jody Berland reading “Contradicting Media: Towards a Political Phenomenology of Listening.” As outlined by Berland, phenomenological representativeness is how music can articulate or reflect broader cultural narratives and identities, articulating different kinds of aspirations for listeners (p. 44). Moreover, Berland argues that the elements of “Canadian-ness” are not present in Canadian music. As discussed during my presentation, it is challenging to think of songs that would go on a quintessentially Canadian playlist, as many songs we think of as Canadian are established on knowing the artists factually as Canadians and not because they articulate Canadian-ness through songs.

This idea prompted me to wonder if I could create a Canadian playlist. So with that, here are the criteria I will be using for this playlist based on my understanding of Berland’s idea of phenomenological representativeness:

  • The song must be recognizable as more than just sung by a Canadian artist.
  • The lyrics must reference distinctly Canadian people, places and things in more than one passing reference.

My Quintessentially Canadian Playlist:

  1. 'Wheat Kings,' The Tragically Hip
  2. 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy,' Gordon Lightfoot
  3. 'Stronger Beer,' Tim Hicks (Class Choice)
  4. ‘Canadian Girls,’ Dean Brody
  5. 'Jane,' Barenaked Ladies

**Honourable Mention - Drake’s Discography**

I believe Drake deserves a place on this playlist, as many of his songs consistently reference Toronto streets and neighbourhoods, the Raptors, famous Canadians, the TTC, Degrassi, and his upbringing in Canada. While these references often appear casually in tracks like “Weston Road Flows,” “Connect,” and “You & The 6,” I see Drake as an exception because, for over a decade, his music has consistently incorporated Canadian references.

Ultimately, it was extremely difficult to even find five songs for this list. I initially hoped to include at least ten, but despite knowing many artists who are Canadian, I struggled to justify their inclusion in a "quintessentially" Canadian playlist. With that, please share any songs I may have overlooked, offer critiques, ask questions, or share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. Hey Emma! In class when we talked about this I couldn't think of anything other than The Tragically Hip. Its crazy I can't think of anything else to add to your playlist. Did you search up any spotify playlists that existed already about Canadian music? I bet there are lots but without your criteria of the songs more than just sung by Canadian artists. I wonder who the next big Canadian artist will be and if in the future there will be a quintessentially Canadian sound again.
