Sound Sesh with Sydney #1: My Personal Beef with Jhene Aiko
I was in middle school when I first heard the song "Bed Peace," by Jhene Aiko & Childish Gambino on musical.ly. I heard it and instantly pulled out my Shazam because I loved the chorus so much. From that day forward, a good decade later, I am still swoon by Jhene Aiko. I love Jhene Aiko because she is one of the few people famous people (especially amongst the Diddy scandals) you can consider a genuinely good person. While other celebrities are going to "freak-offs," Jhene is at home tending to her children and meditating. I love the soft life that she promotes with her personality and her music.
One thing everybody should know about me is I am an avid concert goer, and I try my best to see everybody I like that comes to Toronto. I probably go to Scotiabank Arena or Budweiser stage once a month. Last month was PARTYNEXTDOOR, this month was A Boogie with a Hoodie, and next month is Billie Eilish. After a decade of being a dedicated fan, I thought I was the chosen one when I found out that Jhene's tour came to Toronto on July 2nd (my 21st birthday). What are the chances that my favourite singer of all time is coming to my city on my birthday? I thought she was definitely coming to Canada just to see specifically me. To my luck, I was already downtown when the show was cancelled 10 minutes AFTER doors were supposed to open. On my birthday...
Despite this awful experience of getting my hopes up, I still stand by Jhene and she is still my favourite singer. Her show has now been rescheduled to November 29, so she is back in my good graces again. Hopefully seeing her face up close will bring me to a never before seen level of spirituality from the concert Gods. Linked to this post is a video of one of my favourite live performances she has done. The concept and the video itself is so well curated and tranquilizing.
I chose to take this course because, as mentioned before, I have a great appreciation for aural cultures such as live music. Music plays a large role in my life and I hope to one day work in the entertainment industry, taking this courses' lessons with me in life. In regards to research topics, I would love to explore and research the dynamics behind concerts. From event promotion to sound systems to set design, I would love to investigate the ins and outs of a concert!
Hi Sydney! Great post. I enjoy Jhene Aiko's music as well and I think you're sooo lucky to see Billie Eilish live. Her vocals will be insane and so sonically pleasing in real life. What are some of your favourite Jhene Aiko songs?
