Blog post #1: Ella Fitzpatrick

The first and only CD that was ever gifted to me was the Good Girl Gone Bad album by Rihanna. I remember playing it on a radio CD player when I was little. This was before I ever knew what Spotify or Apple Music was. Since then, Rihanna has always been one of my favourite artists and I now have an album on Spotify that is only dedicated to her. One of her songs that really resonates with me is "Umbrella". This song resonates with me because she says my name in it. The lyric with my name goes "Umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh. I have a memory of being with my family and when this song came on, everyone started to sing my name and point at me. This also happens when I am with my friends. So whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of being around my family and friends.

I took this course because I always had an interest in learning more about digital media because it is such a big thing in our daily lives. I am also interested in learning about music and aural cultures because music is something I connect with and it can have an influence on life. A potential topic I would be interested in exploring is how music and digital media has had such a big impact on our lives and how it has effected us in good and bad ways.

  1. Hey Ella! Thanks for sharing. I have a similar experience as you had with Rihanna. My first CD that was gifted to me was a Britney Spears greatest hits album, and like you explained, Britney Spears has remained one of my favourite artists. This leads me to believe there is a connection between being introduced to music at a young age and continuing to love that artist as you get older. Maybe it is because it brings us a sense of nostalgia. What are your thoughts?

  2. Hey Ella, great to listen to how special Rihanna's "Umbrella" is, from memories with the family to friends. It is cool, isn't it, how a song can transform into more than just a tune, but into part of our life soundtrack, which triggers strong memories and emotions?

Interesting in that respect how one adaptation of the digital medium is affecting music, be it in the very ways in which we use and produce music to how we relate to both the music and each other through digital platforms. I'd be interested to know what your observations are as to how this has shifted our communal experience of music.

  3. Hi Ella,

I love that Rihanna album and Umbrella! Similar to you, the first CD I ever got was from my grandpa on Christmas, and it was Carly Rae Jepsen’s Curiosity album. At the time, the song “Call Me Maybe” was extremely popular, and Carly Rae Jepsen came and performed in my hometown for free at our annual Peterborough Musicfest concert event. Needless to say, that CD was played endlessly and had so many memories attached to it. I am sure the CD is somewhere in my basement, but I never give it much thought because if I wanted to listen to it now, I would go to Apple Music. I think it is useless to buy CDs anymore, even for musicians I love, since Apple Music is constantly accessible on my phone. Would you purchase CDs if Rihanna, for example, released new music? Do you purchase CDs at all?

    All the best,
    Emma

  4. I love the connection you have with Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and how it holds such special memories with your family and friends! It’s amazing how music can become intertwined with personal experiences like that. I also think it’s really interesting that you're exploring the impact of digital media on music and our lives — it's such a relevant topic today. Music and technology are so intertwined now, and it's fascinating to see how they've evolved together. Thanks for sharing the song link!
