Blog post #1: Samantha Miller

Although I enjoy many genres of music, my favourite by far is country. The country music playlist I created on Apple Music has been the same for around seven years, and I continue to add to it every time I find a new song I enjoy listening to. I enjoy listening to pretty much every type of country, but my favourite songs are the ones that tell a story. I like creating an image of a story in my head when listening to the lyrics. Some artists featured on my playlist are Chris Stapleton, Zach Bryan, Morgan Wallen, Megan Moroney, Luke Combs, and many (many) more. I listen to this playlist mostly when driving, but I also listen to it when I am getting ready for the day or going out with my friends.

Here is the link to my playlist; enjoy!!

I decided to take CS400U because music is one of my passions, and it is something that I enjoy learning and writing about. I would love to learn more about the evolution of music genres (specifically country music). I love searching for the deeper meanings within a song, and I am looking forward to expanding my horizons in music genres.

  1. Hi Samantha, I love that you've had the same playlist around for seven years! That playlist must be very refined to your personal taste. I'm not the biggest fan of country but I like would say I enjoy the occasional country pop song. Or songs like Need You Now by Lady Antebellum or All Your'n by Tyler Childers.

  2. Hey Samantha! Thanks for sharing with us your love of country music. My favourite country song is The Kind of Love We Make by Luke Combs, which I see is included on your playlist. Since we like similar artists when it comes to country music I suggest you check out artists Dustin Lynch and Chris Young, I think you'd like their music as well!

  3. Yes, the seven year playlist is *very* impressive. As I mentioned when I visited your group, I became something of country music fan when I lived in Iowa from 1992-2001. The big country music stars of the time where musicians such as George Straight. Alan Jackson, Reba McIntrye, Roseanne Cash, Vince Gill, and so on. The so-called "New Country" of the era was very poppy and very stadium rock oriented in terms of performance. Garth Brooks is the paradigmatic example of new country. It was VERY successful commercially but it rubbed more traditional country fans the wrong way, opening a small space for the emergence of co-called "alt country" that combined and alt rock, folk, and old timey country.

  4. From the mid-90s to the mid 2000s, I was primarily an alt-country (now called "Americana") kind of key. Then, I quit drinking, quit smoking, and became. . . a metalhead!

  5. Hi Samantha! I love how passionate you are about country music! I can relate to how certain genres or songs just resonate deeply, especially those that tell a story. Storytelling is one of the most beautiful aspects of country music, and artists like Chris Stapleton and Zach Bryan really capture that raw, emotional essence. It’s also great that you’ve been curating your playlist for so long — it must be full of memories. I’m also curious about the evolution of music genres, and I think CS400U will offer so much insight into how different sounds and themes have shaped modern music. Thanks for sharing your playlist! I’ll definitely check it out.

  6. Hey Samantha! I can someone relate to having the same playlists for such a long period of time, I similarly have done the same thing with a mix of pop and rap. I also have been slowly adding new songs as my taste in music changes. I find it fun when a song that I added so long ago comes on and you kinda remember that time and have a self image of yourself and reflect on why you added and what resonated with yourself and the song at the time. Thanks for sharing.
