The Power of Sound

In the age of digital media, sound and music play an essential role in how we experience the world around us. From the songs that make us feel nostalgic to the audio cues that evoke specific settings, our connection to sound is deeply personal and powerful.

Music, in particular, has the unique ability to trigger memories and emotions, creating associations that tie us to places, people, or moments in time. For instance, a song you listened to during a special summer can transport you back to that season with just a few notes. This emotional resonance is why music continues to be a key part of storytelling in film, podcasts, and digital content—it enriches narratives and shapes our interpretation. For example, as I mentioned in class, I first heard the song Revival by Zach Bryan a few summers ago while staying at a cottage in Muskoka with friends. We all sang along to the 10-minute version, creating an unforgettable and wholesome moment. Now, whenever I hear that song, it takes me back to that summer evening, surrounded by my friends, enjoying eachothers company and the song.

Beyond music, soundscapes—the ambient noises that form our auditory backdrop—define spaces and influence our behaviour. Consider how the hum of traffic or the chatter in a cafĂ© sets the atmosphere of a city, or how game designers use layered audio to immerse players in a virtual world. These soundscapes are crafted with the intention of creating a sensory experience that feels real and engaging.

Digital platforms have amplified our ability to engage with sound, making it more accessible and personalized than ever before. However, as we curate our aural experiences with playlists and podcasts, it’s worth reflecting on how this constant, on-demand access to sound shapes our emotional connections and memories.

What sounds or songs evoke the strongest memories for you? And how has the digital age changed the way you interact with music and sound?

  1. Enjoyed reading your post! I find that specific ethiopian songs evoke childhood memories for me and remind me of large holidays. In the digital age I find myself trying to reconnect with the sounds of nature or just listening to the sound things existing around me. This is mainly because I feel my hearing is damaged from constantly having my airpods in and my music too loud. This is also because I recognize myself being more and more incapable of going through my day without listening to spotify or netflix.
